Thank you for your ongoing support! When I think about what defines modern etiquette, the words “kindness” and “respect” are always top of mind. After all, what does it matter to pass the salt and pepper together, if we can’t show kindness to those at our table?
The fact is, the rules of etiquette carry little weight without the support of kindness and respect.
The way we treat others is of the utmost importance and manners will always matter more than following the rules of etiquette. Of course, in the best situations, good manners and proper etiquette go hand-in-hand, helping to support each other as you shine as your best self.
Random Acts of Kindness Week is coming up soon, with Random Acts of Kindness Day recognized this year on February 17, 2026. So today I’m sharing 17 ways you can spread kindness in your home and around your community.
In a world often divided, let’s each be the light that proves that love for others always wins and that we can make kindness the norm.
17 Random Acts of Kindness
Send a note of gratitude. A handwritten note is a wonderful way to say thank you to someone who has shown you kindness in the past. Remember, thank you notes aren’t reserved for physical gifts. Challenge yourself to write a note of gratitude to someone who has shared their time, their wisdom or their own act of kindness with you. Not sure where to begin? Learn how to write the perfect thank you note.
Say Please & Thank You. Be especially kind when dining out and use your server’s name throughout your meal. Always be kind and courteous to those in the service industry.
Donate gently used books. Drop off a handful of books to the local library or little library station in your neighborhood. Share the gift of imagination and storytelling with those in your community.
Leave a positive note in your child’s lunchbox. A gentle reminder of your love and support will certainly brighten their day. If you do not have a child, leave a positive note for a coworker to find at their desk or in their inbox.
Drop off a treat to a neighbor. A fresh baked batch of muffins, a bouquet of flowers from your backyard or an offer to shovel the snow, seek out meaningful ways to support your neighbors and watch your community grow.
Donate canned goods to the local food bank. Add a few extra canned goods to your grocery cart and deliver them to the local food bank. You never know how your small sacrifice might impact a family down the street.
Share a smile and a wave to passersby. A smile, a nod, a friendly wave. Simply recognizing the human passing by can make someone feel seen and appreciated.
Put your phone away when speaking with others. Give people your undivided attention, practice active listening skills and truly be present with the people in front of you. The people and things behind the screen can wait.
Paint Kindness Rocks with your family to leave around the neighborhood. This is such a fun activity! You can use what you have or purchase a kit like this to create Kindness Rocks. My children love to paint the rocks and hide them in our garden for their friends to find, or leave them at the playground to brighten up another child’s day.
Organize a clean up for a nearby park or playground. Check with your local community leaders to find a local park clean-up. If there’s not already an organized effort, why not start your own? Now is the perfect time to lend a hand to help clean up parks and public areas for everyone to enjoy. This could also include weeding and planting in community gardens!
Take care of a house chore for your partner, roommate or child. Take care of the trash, put the dishes away or make your child’s bed. If there’s a chore someone else is usually responsible for, quietly take care of it and give them the gift of extra time to do something they enjoy.
Submit a positive review for 3 local businesses. This is a simple way to support small businesses. Simply leave a positive review online, either on their website, Google Business page or social media account. Your positive words will not only make the company owner’s (and team’s) day, you will also help drive new customers to help support their business.
Create a refreshment box to leave on your porch for delivery drivers. If you often have delivery drivers stopping by, make sure to take care of them. Keep the light on after dark, make sure pathways are clear and leave a basket of water bottles and snacks for drivers to help themselves. Your small acts of kindness will ease their day and leave them feeling appreciated.
See how many sincere compliments you can give in one day. Never underestimate the powers of a kind word. Take a moment to give genuine compliments to friends, family or a passing neighbor! Whether it’s complimenting someone’s trendy Spring outfit, their hard work, or something you admire about them, a little appreciation can go a long way in brightening someone’s day. Your positive words can create an uplifting atmosphere that inspires others to pay it forward.
Call a friend or family member you haven’t spoken with in a while. Oftentimes we focus on sharing random acts of kindness with strangers, when it’s the ones closest to us that need it most. Take a few minutes to reach out to a friend or family member you haven’t heard from lately. It will make their day to know that you’re thinking of them.
Introduce yourself to someone new at work or school. Whether you notice someone new in your neighborhood, at your child’s sports practice or you’ve recently welcomed a new colleague to your company, be the first one to reach out and introduce yourself. You can learn how to make a lasting first impression with this helpful guide.
Hold the door open for the person walking in behind you. While the old etiquette rule was for men to hold the door open for women, that rule no longer applies. When it comes to modern etiquette, the rule is simply to help out the person behind you. If someone holds the door for you, remember to thank them and return the favor for someone else later on.
These random acts of kindness may seem simple, but each one can truly make a difference. According to Harvard Health Publishing, “being kind isn’t just gratifying – it’s a path to greater wellness.”
The article continues to share that those who consistently practice intentional acts of kindness may experience psychological benefits including increased empathy, self-esteem, compassion and a better mood while the physical benefits can include lower blood pressure and lower levels of cortisol.
Is one day of kindness enough? Not quite. While there is no act of kindness too small, the best way to experience the benefits of being kind is to consistently seek out ways to help others each and every day.
With this topic in mind, here is a quick anecdote I must share. I hope you enjoy this quick story and that it inspires you the way it inspired me.
This past summer, my uncle gave my youngest child a beautiful wood toy car he had carved and built himself. Now retired, he spends his free time creating these simple, beautifully crafted toys, not to sell, but to give away. He leaves them at playgrounds for children to find and always keeps a few on him to share with a child who might be upset at a restaurant or on a plane. He’s always seeking ways to help young parents and bring a sense of whimsy and delight by sharing his creations with a heart of kindness.
This week, I encourage you to reflect on acts of kindness you’ve experienced. How did it make you feel? What do you remember about it? Reflecting on how you felt when you received an act of kindness not only brings back those positive feelings, but also reinforces the importance of sharing kindness with others.
Challenge yourself to actively seek out ways to help others and be the light that shines, especially on those who may be feeling lonely or experiencing pain or loss. Reaching out to neighbors creates stronger communities and making space for strangers can lead to new connections and perhaps even a new friend!
It’s one thing to study etiquette, perfect your table settings and know the right thing to do, but it is taking the time to put that effort into practice by living with the principle of treating others with kindness and respect.
